The World map of Flight Rising

The planet that the World of Flight Rising takes place on was first formed by the original four gods, and then continually changed throughout the ages by everything from the battles between the gods to the now extinct civilizations that once thrived on the continent. In present day it takes place on an unnamed continent that is separated into eleven parts, each dominated by one of the eleven flights.

Although the continent itself is unnamed, the name of the planet that is most widely used among inter flight discussion is "Sornieth" (draconic for "our planet").[1] Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire dragons each have a separate name that they call the world, as they feel that their gods had the greatest hands in their creation.[citation needed]

Sornieth's day and year length are similar to Earth's[2], meaning that there are around 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. Sornieth also has the same rotational direction as Earth.[3] The planet's radius is roughly one and a half times larger than Earth's and has slightly less gravity.[4] There are "one to two modestly-sized moons"[5] that orbit Sornieth. It is unknown if the dragons have names for the planet's moon(s).

The world is filled with magic that can be harnessed by the creatures who live on it. This is what drew the Shade to the planet in the first place and what makes it so troublesome for the planet. Though the magic in the environment can be replenished naturally, the Shade's rate of magic consumption is much faster than can be renewed.[6]

Sornieth experiences its own winters, springs, summers, and autumns much like Earth does. However, the shift in temperature and weather patterns affects the elemental regions in different ways, some seeing more change than others. For instance, the width and strength of the Twisting Crescendo is much more fearsome in the late summer, when temperatures are warmer and more humid. The snowstorms of the Southern Icefield can send flurries as far north as the Starfall Isles. Overall, however, seasonal patterns are harder to predict or understand due to the constant imbalance in elemental magic ripping through the world.[7]
