Guardians are immense, protective creatures. The guardian species originates from Fishspine Reef, though the nature of The Search sees individuals wandering far from the birthplace of their race.

Physical Attributes[]

Guardian Dragons are one of the largest known dragon species. They have fins along their face, limbs and chest. These rigid fins are armored, and can be held stiff or collapsed like fans. The fins can be flared outward to help protect the hide of the creature, making the guardian one of the most durable dragons in physical combat. Males of the species boast impressive beards that they go to great lengths to maintain.

The average size of a Guardian dragon varies a bit between males and females, with males being larger on average. Male Guardians average at a 15.98 meter length, 17.66 meter wingspan, and a weight of 10,230.49 kilograms. Females average at a 14.27 meter length, 16.14 meter wingspan, and a weight of 8,894.02 kilograms.[1]

Social[]

Guardians commonly live in small groups, though many prefer complete solitude. When a guardian becomes an adult, he or she will leave their birth clan and begin a journey known as The Search, which can span decades. This journey typically marks the last time that the new adult will ever see their original clan.

Dragon's Charge & The Search[]

When a guardian dragon comes of age, it instinctively seeks out a charge to protect for the rest of its considerably long life. Generally, a guardian will gravitate towards something or someone that is of particular interest or importance to them.[2] Most guardians do not know what their charge will be until they encounter it, and so they set out on a journey. During this time it will wander tirelessly, seeking a worthy individual, object, or place to stand watch over. Once a guardian discovers its charge, it begins its new life. It is then considered a true dragon by the rest of their species. A guardian without a charge is considered only half a dragon.

Guardian dragons see failure in keeping their chosen charge safe as a terrible blight to their honor, and most will pine away rather than live with the shame of their failure.

Lairs[]

Guardian dragons require a spacious location in which to carve out their den. Each lair is carved in a shape unique to the guardian who will live there, the shape of the space owing more to the preferred movement and size of the guardian and less with visual aesthetics. guardians create lairs near to their charge. If they are protecting a specific location, this will often mean that they live some distance away from their adoptive clan.

Tactics[]

The sheer size of the guardian species awards them a place on the front lines of any skirmish. They wade into a battle without hesitation, using their tough armored fins and strong wings to protect themselves, and the more fragile species that follow in their wake. Adults prefer to fight tooth and claw through most of their lives. As they age and become venerable, their typically small inner reserve of magic begins to grow and flare. Older members of the species use elemental augments to enhance each swing, rip, and thrust in battle.

Notable Guardian Dragons[]

  • Galore is a male Guardian who safeguards rare artifacts. He can be found at the Trading Post where he occasionally gives out items to players.

Trivia[]

  • The Guardian art is featured in Jessica Peffer (Undel)'s book, Dragon Evolution. The male is under the "standard batlike dragon wing" section. The female and hatchling are referred to as "frost dragons", and are described thusly: "Your frost hatchling is born fully scaled and much heavier than the typical dragon. These sorts of adaptations will help it stay warm in icy climates. Though he may be small now, he will someday grow into a mighty beast who guards or terrorizes the arctic poles!"
  • An old image featuring a bearded Guardian hatchling can be found on Undel's DeviantArt:

  • Guardian dragons have an average lifespan of 300 cycles, and are one of the longest-lived breeds in Flight Rising. They would be considered a sub-adult by age 10, and a full adult by age 50 (between the ages of 10 and 50 Guardian dragons will typically seek out their charge). They do not reach their full adult size until they are 100.
  • Guardian dragons like to protect sentients, places, or things—something tangible. It is possible for a Guardian to latch onto an idea strongly enough that they felt it was tangible and worth protecting, but this is not the norm. It would be considered deviant behavior, and most Guardian dragons would not accept an intangible as a valid charge.[3]
  • The fins that comprise a Guardian's underbelly can be held open or relaxed by the rigid spines in between each bit of webbing.[4]
  • Broken Heartstones are left as offerings at the graves of dead charges; a Guardian finding one is considered to have been given a warning by the fates, a final chance to prevent death.
  • Guardian hatchlings will occasionally bite onto the ends of Maren Seahunters' spears to give the wielder a startle.
