Flight Rising currently has 23 dragon breeds; 15 modern and 8 ancient. There are four Plentiful Breeds that are available at the start of the game, four Common Breeds, three Uncommon Breeds, two Limited Breeds, two Rare Breeds, and eight Ancient Breeds. Each dragon breed has a hatchling form that possesses the same genes and colors as the adult it will turn into. All breeds grow up into adults after approximately five days, though their adult picture may not appear for several hours after.

Modern Breeds[]

Wing icon Each modern dragon breed has a rarity assigned to it based on how it is obtained (without breeding). This rarity affects the likelihood that the breed will be passed on when crossbred, as well as the breeding cooldown acquired after creating a nest.[1] However, despite their rarity status, all dragon breeds are relatively easy to come by (though not always with certain colors or genes). Dragons of all breeds are always for sale in the Auction House, and buying dragons from other players via the forums is always an option.

When bred, a pair of dragons can have one to five eggs if the parents are of different breeds; dragons of the same breed can only lay a maximum of four eggs together. Note that this only matters for the breed itself and not the rarity category, e.g. two Tundras can only have up to four eggs, but a Tundra and a Mirror can have up to five even though both are Plentiful.

Plentiful Dragons[]

All Plentiful Dragons

All plentiful dragons in a variety of colors.

The four plentiful breeds—otherwise known as starter breeds—are the Fae Dragons, Guardian Dragons, Mirror Dragons, and Tundra Dragons. Upon starting an account, a user can pick the one of the four plentiful breeds, as well as their dragon's sex, primary, and secondary colors; the tertiary color will be randomly chosen. A second dragon of the opposite sex, also a plentiful breed, will be generated and given to the player—this dragon's breed and colors are random. These are called Progenitors and are always created with basic genes.

Additionally, unhatched elemental eggs can be found by scavenging or as drops from Coliseum battles. These eggs, when hatched, give a plentiful dragon hatchling of random sex, colors, and breed.

Starter breed change scrolls (Fae, Guardian, Mirror, and Tundra) are 50,000 Icon treasure in the Marketplace, found under the Specialty tab.

All plentiful dragons have a breeding cooldown of 15 days.

Common Dragons[]

All common dragons

All common dragons in a variety of colors.

The common breeds are Pearlcatcher Dragons, Ridgeback Dragons, Snapper Dragons, and Spiral Dragons; all ancient breeds are also in this category. Common breed change scrolls are purchased in the treasure Marketplace.

Pearlcatcher and Ridgeback Scrolls are 250,000 Icon treasure, while Snapper and Spiral Scrolls are 325,000 Icon treasure.

All common dragons have a breeding cooldown of 20 days.

Uncommon Dragons[]

All Uncommon dragons

All uncommon dragons in a variety of colors.

Skydancer Dragons, Bogsneak Dragons, and Obelisk Dragons are the three uncommon breeds. Skydancer Scrolls and Obelisk Scrolls can be purchased for 400,000 Icon treasure in the Marketplace, while Bogsneak Scrolls and eggs are craftable via Baldwin's Bubbling Brew starting at level 16.

All uncommon dragons have a breeding cooldown of 25 days.

Limited Dragons[]

All limited dragons

All limited dragons in a variety of colors.

The limited breeds are Imperial Dragons and Nocturne Dragons. Imperial Scrolls were only obtainable through a donation of $30 or more to the Kickstarter, and are thus extremely rare. Nocturne Scrolls and eggs cycle in yearly during the Night of the Nocturne event in December.

All limited dragons have a breeding cooldown of 30 days.

Rare Dragons[]

All rare dragons

All rare dragons in a variety of colors.

The two rare breeds are the Wildclaw Dragons and Coatl Dragons. Rare breed change scrolls are purchased in the gem Marketplace.

Coatl scrolls cost 2,000 Icon gem in the Specialty section of the Marketplace. Wildclaw scrolls are also sold in the Marketplace for 2,000 Icon gem, but cycle in and out of stock. Keep an eye on the Site Status Box for announcements that they've been made available!

All rare dragons have a breeding cooldown of 35 days.

Ancient Breeds[]

AncientDragonBreeds

Most available ancient breeds in a variety of colors.

Ancient icon Ancient Breeds are a fairly new category of dragon—they were announced in April of 2019, and debuted the following June with Gaolers as the very first ancient breed. Stirred by the elemental upheaval, ancient dragons from eras long gone and forgotten by time have awoken.

These ancient dragons are primordial in nature. The circumstances surrounding their creation make them physically incompatible with any other dragon on Sornieth. While they may discover alliances or work together with both modern and other ancient dragon breeds, they can't and will never be able to procreate with them. Additionally, they have their own unique lineart-breaking genes, but cannot wear Apparel. However, because of this, they are eligible to have "non-standard" body types and may be armless, wingless, or even have multiple heads!

Available ancient breeds are the Gaoler Dragon, Banescale Dragon, Veilspun Dragon, Aberration Dragon, Undertide Dragon, Aether Dragon, Sandsurge Dragon and Auraboa Dragon. Aberrations, Banescale, Gaolers, Aethers, and Auraboas are available via breed change scrolls from the treasure Marketplace for 275,000 Icon treasure while Veilspun and Sandsurge breed change scrolls can be purchased from the gem Marketplace for 1,000 Icon gem. Undertide scrolls can be unearthed from the Deepsea Dive digsite at Arlo's Ancient Artifacts.

Galore has previously given out two Clanbound Gaoler Scrolls, two Clanbound Aberration Scrolls, two Clanbound Unhatched Banescale Eggs, two Clanbound Undertide Scrolls, two Clanbound Unhatched Aether Eggs, and two Clanbound Unhatched Auraboa Eggs to all active players at the time of their release.

All ancient breeds are categorized as Common and thus have a breeding cooldown of 20 days.

Dragon Sizes[]

Dragon breed sizes can be divided into three groups: small, medium, and large, with the large majority of dragons falling into the medium size group. From hatching, dragons will continue growing until the end of their first breeding cooldown. As cooldowns vary by rarity, a Guardian—a plentiful breed—will be fully grown by 15 days while a Wildclaw—a rare breed—won't reach their full size until 35 days have passed.

Fae, Spirals, and Veilspun are the smallest of the dragon breeds with Veilspun being the very smallest, ranging from 0.38 to 1.35 meters in length. Fae are slightly larger, ranging from 0.42 to 1.6 meters in length. Spirals are very long, coming in at 2 to 4.5 meters in length which makes them of similar length to a Tundra. However, their short legs and thin bodies make them smaller in general proportion and weight.

The medium group contains Tundras, Skydancers, Nocturnes, Aethers, Snappers, Pearlcatchers, Aberrations, Wildclaws, Mirrors, Banescale, Bogsneaks, and Coatl. Tundras are the smallest of the medium-sized dragons coming in at a length of 2.4 to 4.8 meters, while Coatl are the largest ranging from 6.7 to 8.5 meters. Snappers, however, are the heaviest of the medium group by far, weighing an average of around seven times more than Coatl do making them of similar weight to the smallest of the large breeds.

The large group contains Gaolers, Obelisks, Guardians, Undertides, Auraboas, Sandsurges, Ridgebacks, and Imperials. Imperials are by far the longest breed, ranging from 18.8 to nearly 32 meters. Guardians however are the largest in the sense of weight, being very thick and stocky while Imperials are majorly neck and tail with long bodies. Ridgebacks have the longest legs and would likely stand the tallest measuring by shoulder height. Gaolers are the smallest of the large breeds, ranging from 8.6 to 14.1 meters in length but have a similar weight range as Guardians, being lighter by only around 1,000 kilograms even at both breeds' heaviest recorded weights. Auraboas are the lightest of the large breeds, weighing less than even Undertides.

Below is a list of average dragon sizes, along with the smallest and largest recorded sizes for each breed.[16][17][18][19][20] This does not include dragons who have their sizes bugged. Dragons who have had a Nocturne breed change scroll or a Bogsneak breed change scroll applied to them are bugged to be much smaller than the breeds' averages. There is also a bug that can reset a dragon to their hatchling size when they have been bred, causing them to grow back to their adult size during that breeding cooldown.

Trivia[]

  • Upon the site's release there were only 10 dragon breeds: Fae, Guardians, Mirrors, Tundras, Pearlcatchers, Ridgebacks, Snappers, Spirals, Imperials, and Wildclaws.
  • The plural forms of Fae, Coatl, Banescale, and Veilspun do not have an 's' at the end.
  • Dragons becoming fully grown adults after just five days is a game mechanic, not canon; hatchlings take many years to reach maturity, according to Undel.[23] In fact, a baby dragon growing to adult size could take anywhere from 5 years to 50 years depending on the breed.[24]
  • Flight Rising dragons are warmblooded, though some breeds are better at regulating their body temperatures than others as their ability to generate and shed heat varies.[25]
  • Bogsneaks are currently the only dragon breed created not by a deity but artificially, thanks to an alchemy "accident" that provoked a mutation.[26][27] They are the first—and currently only—breed obtainable via Baldwin's Bubbling Brew.
  • Banescale were the first Ancient breed to break the "two arms, two legs, two wings" format of modern dragons. They are a type of wyvern—dragons with no front legs/arms.
  • Sandsurges were the breed to not have wings. They instead have a "large webbed fan that runs down the length of their body".[28]
  • There are currently three unobtainable dragon "breeds" that have appeared on the site in some way: Swiftwing Dragons, a rejected wyvern-like concept breed who were revamped into Pearlcatchers; Courier Dragons, who are NPC-only and not considered part of the eleven flights; and Emperor Dragons, undead abominations created from the corpses of multiple Imperials. It is extremely unlikely these specific dragons will ever be able to be owned by players.
  • In the Epilogue, the deities each made their own dragon breed(s), though none were specifically named. This is apparent when comparing some of the deities to their creations, e.g. Tundras resemble the Icewarden, Ridgebacks resemble the Stormcatcher, Spirals resemble the Windsinger, and so on.
  • Some breeds are described as having the ability to speak in a manner similar to humans, conveying emotion and expression. However, Fae speak in a robotic monotone,[29] while Coatls have their own native tongue involving humming at various pitches and intervals. This seems to bother other dragons, as "sour notes and incomprehensible melody grates on their senses".[30]
  • There is little difference between males and females aside from pose, though some breeds show more obvious sexual dimorphism (e.g. Ridgebacks).
    • In the breed's art, a male Bogsneak displays two fin crests, while the female only has one. However, the shape and number of these fans are said to "vary widely", so this is not explicitly a sex-specific trait.
    • In the breed's art, a male Coatl's feather crest is shown flared up, while the female's is relaxed and settled downwards. Aequorin has confirmed that Coatls can move their crests.[31]
    • Female Gaolers appear to have more of a thick, fluffy "mane" on their necks than the males. Males appear to have longer, curling tines on their antlers.
    • Male Guardians have a long, stringy beard, while females do not.[32]
    • Male Imperials have a long beard on their chin in addition to the fluff around their jaws. Females, however, have an extra pair of short whiskers giving them three whiskers total on each side compared to the male's two whiskers.
    • The facial spines are larger on male Nocturnes than on females. The ripple along the neck/upper body also appears to be variable, though that may be on a individual basis and not sex-specific.[33]
    • Female Pearlcatchers possess a single, shining horn, while males have two.[34]
    • Male Ridgebacks possess much longer nose horns than females, who have virtually none.[35]
    • Male Skydancers have four long antennae while females only have two short ones.
    • The male Snapper has a larger, lower jaw and chin than the female, and more prominent canines. The female is shown to have larger horns that curve upwards.[36]
    • The male Tundra possesses a full lion-like mane while females only have a "beard". It is unknown if Tundras have any obvious dimorphism when in their winter coats.[37]
    • Male Veilspun's horns fork in the back, while females have a small fork in the front.
  • Wildclaws are the only modern dragons that walk exclusively on their hind legs. Others can generally use their front legs as hands, but carry their weight on four appendages, while the Wildclaws more closely resemble some sort of bipedal dinosaur, such as something in the velociraptorinae subfamily.
  • Snappers are the only dragons to have no obvious flexible fingers or toes. This likely gives them difficulty using tools meant for other dragon breeds as most others seem to be able to hold things in their hands or feet.
  • Staff doesn't have any plans for Shade or corrupted dragons, but unaligned dragon breeds are definitely a possibility! "Many of these archaic creatures were crafted by the gods when they first began to vie for territory. Hastily designed, these creations were needed to carve the land into distinct realms, and remain very different from one another to this day. Not all ancient dragons were created by the elemental gods—others sprang forth from pure coagulated magic, owing no allegiance at all."[38]
